Phil McDowell

General Manager

Phil joined ABS in December 2017 as the General Manager. Phil is responsible for the day to day operations of the business.

With over 30 years in the industry, he has extensive management skills and a solid technical background.

Previously, Phil spent 20 years with Fletcher Construction in various senior management roles.

Phil is a strong leader and sets high standards. Highly respected with a keen eye for detail he insures the business stays in tune and that we maintain our strong market position.

Phil has been involved in some of Wellingtons largest building projects and brings a depth of knowledge critical to the success of the business.

With his in-depth knowledge of contracts and his experience in commercial buildings, he is able to resolve complex challenges and provide strong leadership to the company.

Ron Coenders

Managing Director

Qualified to NZCE (HVAC) Ron has extensive knowledge of the building services industry.

Ron's technical expertise, leadership and innovation have earned him a high degree of respect from clients, employees and other parties within the industry.  He is a tireless worker who leads his team by example, setting the highest standards and always striving for excellence.

Ron has an intimate knowledge of the HVAC, BMS and hydraulic systems and has over 30 years of service in the industry.

Ron is currently the Managing Director of the company and continues to provide sound engineering leadership.

Peter Appleby


Peter joined Advanced Building Services from Gooder Construction where he was the Te Papa site project manager and he directly project managed the mechanical and electrical fit-out contracts post construction.

Peter joined Advanced Building Services in 1998 and initially undertook the role of Operations Manager at Wellington Newspapers Press House Complex.

Peter was promoted to the position of Client Manager at the start of 2000 and his clients include CBRE, Colliers International, Talavera Properties, Prime Property Group, Ministry of Justice and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

Peter is now a company director and continues to actively work as a Client Manager.

Steve Arthur

Client Manager

Steve was a founding member of ABS and spent seven years as a Service Technician before his promotion into his current role as a Client Manager within the company.

Steve spent a five year stint away working for Colliers Jardine, Setpoint Solutions and Kone Elevators during which time he gained valuable management and controls experience.

Steve returned to ABS in 2005 and is currently a Client Manager.

Steve is a high output, high energy person with great fault finding and diagnostic skills.  He has excellent people skills and is well regarded by tenants, facilities managers and property owners alike.

Steve has an Electrical Trade Certificate and has completed a Diploma in Energy Management.

Lachlan Hawkins

Client Manager

Lachlan joined our Service Team as a Client Manager in 2015 to meet the demands of a business with continued growth year on year.

Qualified to NZCE (HVAC) Lachlan has extensive HVAC knowledge of the building services industry, previously being employed by Haden as Contracts Manager and latterly Acting Branch Manager.

Lachlan brings a wealth of knowledge to further support a strong team that looks after a prestigious portfolio of buildings, including Massey University.

Owen Brown

Company Engineer

Owen joined ABS in June 2015 as a Degree Qualified Engineer (B. Eng Mech.) in the position of Company Design Engineer.

He has worked in the HVAC industry as a design engineer for 30 years in Wellington, and is a current member of ASHRAE, the largest international Institute for HVAC engineers. He previously worked with GHD, Aurecon, and Stephenson & Turner.

Owen over the years has been involved with the original designs or refurbishments for many of the buildings in Wellington, and therefore has significant experience with a variety of the HVAC systems in these buildings.

Owen was a lead Building Services Engineer in his previous employment, and has therefore gained experience with other building services.

Owen’s passion is to select the most suitable and efficient HVAC system for clients, which also provides the best environmental conditions for the occupants.

Mick Bancroft

IT and Systems Integration Manager

Initially trained in the Royal Air Force as an electrical technician and qualified to ‘B’ Tech Elect Engineering, Mick has enjoyed over 39 years in the engineering and the building services industry in a wide variety of roles.

Mick joined Advanced Building Services in 1997 to restructure the building maintenance department at Wellington Newspapers Press House Complex in the role of Operations Manager.

Mick moved into a Client Manager role in 1998 and in 2016, adopted his current role as IT and Systems Integration Manager.

Mick spent some time in Australia in 2001/2002 as a Senior Software Developer where he designed leading edge cloud based facilities management software solutions for the private healthcare industry.

Mick is currently working on new integrated systems and API connectors to our cloud-based software and service delivery systems. He is designing and implementing planned preventative maintenance software solutions unprecedented within the HVAC industry in New Zealand.
